South West Sub-regions

The South West of Western Australia offers a diversity of landscape, facilities and scope. Where to invest in the South West may depend on a variety of factors specific to the industry and where investment opportunities may prevail.

The region comprises of 3 sub-regions, each offering a range of opportunities, potential benefits and challenges, and is also covered by 12 local governments.

Bunbury Geographe Sub-Region

Including the vibrant and growing port city of Bunbury, the Shires of Capel, Donnybrook-Balingup, Dardanup, Collie and Harvey, this Sub-Region is rich in agricultural and mining and a growing tourism hub with picturesque countryside, waterways and forest. The advantages of access to a modern port facility, business assets and retail outlets cannot be underestimated.

Capes Sub-Region

The Capes area stretching from Busselton to Augusta includes the famous Margaret River Wine Region and is the major regional tourism destination of Western Australia. With numerous world-class wineries, beautiful beaches and forests, and a well established tourism and events industry, the region is supported by recently upgraded airport facilities, tertiary education facilities, a good infrastructure.

Warren-Blackwood (Southern Forests) Sub-Region

The Warren-Blackwood sub-region has an approximate area of 19,000 km and is comprised of the councils of Boyup Brook, Bridgetown-Greenbushes, Manjimup and Nannup.

The Shire of Manjimup is the hub of the timber industry in the South West region while Nannup is part of the outstanding Balingup-Nannup-Bridgetown tourist drive, one of the very best in the State. Coastal access, national parks and its close proximity to the Margaret River wine region bring many tourists to the area. The shire also has a strong agricultural sector with dairy, beef cattle, horticulture, floriculture and viticulture operations in the area.

Mining and tourism industries figure prominently in the Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes, with the farming, horticultural and viticulture sectors also contributing to the local economy, while the Shire of Boyup Brook has an economy based strongly on primary industry, with the emphasis on broad scale agriculture. Industries include wool, vineyards, timber plantations, sheep, cattle, grain and olives.
